While last time we reviewed how criminals use Artificial Intelligence to craft realistic phishing schemes, we also want to let our members know how to use AI safely. Even though AI can pose a threat in the hands of bad actors, you can also use AI in your daily tasks. You may already encounter Artificial Intelligence in your day-to-day life: the fraud protection your financial institution uses, the chat bot helping you on a shopping website, or even photo-editing tools you use right on your phone!

Personal Information

Many AI chatbots store chat information on their servers for an indefinite amount of time. Make sure you are never entering personal information like full names, addresses, login information, or more into the chat. Bad actors may be able to hack into AI servers and access the information. While now with most AI chat features, you can turn off the ability to store chats, it is still a good general rule to never share any personal information with AI. Make sure to read up on the privacy policies of the AI you are using to learn exactly what information is being stored and how it’s being used.

Accuracy

It is important to remember not to rely solely on AI to complete tasks and get information. As a machine that learns from information it is given, AI is bound to make mistakes. Always fact check information you receive from AI with other sources before using it. AI has also been known to plagiarize content from across the internet as well. Before using any of the information or written pieces from Artificial Intelligence, always do your due diligence and make sure that the information is accurate and original.

Reputation

As AI becomes more and more popular, there have been a variety of different AI applications available to us. Like with any software or program, it is important to do your research and make sure you are downloading a reputable and safe AI. Fraudsters have been known to advertise fake AI apps, with the intent of installing malware on devices or stealing personal information. A quick Google search to look for reviews and mentions from trusted sources can save you a lot of trouble!

Similarly, be sure to always make sure the AI applications you are using are up to date to ensure that you receive all the newest security updates.

While Artificial Intelligence is an exciting technology growing rapidly in popularity, it is still important to still follow internet safety best practices and not put all of your trust into these programs. Always report suspicious or inappropriate content that comes from AI, and still guard your private and personal information!
